Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccine Update
The ABRYSVO vaccine, approved by the FDA in August 2023, is a single dose IM injection recommended for pregnant individuals at 32-36 weeks gestational age to prevent respiratory tract disease in infants caused by RSV. The vaccine should not be administered before 32 weeks or after 36 weeks, 6 days of pregnancy, due to potential risks such as pre-term birth for earlier administration and insufficient time for antibody transfer for later administration. In cases where pregnant individuals are outside this gestational window, it's advised that their newborns receive the RSV monoclonal antibody, Nirsevimab (Beyfortus). It should be administered only to those whose baby would be born during RSV season, September through March.
ABRYSVO is available in single dose or 5-dose vials and should be refrigerated. The most common adverse reactions in pregnant patients include injection site pain, headache, muscle pain, and nausea. Infants may experience low birth weight and jaundice. It's covered by Medicaid and commercial insurance.
For more information, please visit the CDC's Emergency Preparedness and Response page, the CDC's FAQ about RSV Vaccine for Pregnant People, and the AMA's update on the 2024 immunization schedule.
